First Iowa Orff

Located in Cedar Falls, IA, First Iowa Orff is a chapter of the American Orff Schulwerk Association. We are a group of primarily classroom music teachers who meet three or four times a year for workshops with guest presenters from around the country. AOSA and FIO are based on the educational philosophy, process, and music of Carl Orff and Gunild Keetman.

I know many of you are aware of this, but I thought it would be appropriate to send out this information through email.

We received word that Nicolas Remfrey, 17-month old grandson of Dwayne (retired Holmes JH band teacher) and Rachel Johnson (Cedar Falls music teacher and accompanist for many of our soloists) suffered a stroke and passed away last Saturday.  I'm sure the Johnsons and the Remfreys would appreciate knowing that they are in our thoughts and prayers at this time of tragedy.  

A memorial service for Nicolas will be held today (Tuesday, April 28th) at the Northlake Unitarian Church in Kirkland, Washington, starting at 4:00 PM. 

In lieu of flowers, the Nicolas Remfrey Memorial Scholarship at Luther College has been established.  Contributions can be sent to

Instruments for Saturday's workshop

This is a reminder about the Orff workshop with Jo Ella Hug this
Saturday from 9-3 at GBPAC at UNI.

If you are attending, please bring:
1 Soprano recorder (plus any other sizes you have)
1 hand drum
1 pair mallets

Also, I need some people to volunteer to bring ONE of the following:

Orff Workshop April 18

Dear friends,

Please join us for the First Iowa Orff chapter workshop next Saturday,
April 18, from 9-3 at the Gallagher-Bluedorn Performing Arts Center at
UNI. Our guest clinician is the American Orff Schulwerk Association
(AOSA) President, Jo Ella Hug. Jo Ella teaches in Missoula, Montana,
as well as workshops and levels courses around the country. We are
pleased to have Jo Ella come to Iowa!

Workshops are $20 each plus $10 for membership (if this is your first
workhop this year). Students are just $5.

If you plan to attend, please RSVP to Emily Goulson
(egoulson@msn.com), and let her know if you can bring a dish to share
for our potluck lunch!
